- Richard Taliaferro, a Master Architect, built & lived in the Manor House.
- The Powhatan Plantation name was derived from Powhatan Creek, which laid within a territory of the Powhatan Indian Confederation.
- Powhatan Plantation was patented in the 1600's by Richard and Benjamin Eggleston.
- There are few clues about the Eggleston's lives at Powhatan, except for a documentary record.
- Richard Eggleston took part in a raid against the Indians in the 1650's, also known as the campaign of Bloody Run.
- Benjamin Eggleston was given 39 lashes to his bare back for having - abused the Prerogative and the Authority of the Governor - (trespassing).
- Eggleston's family descendants continued to live in James City County until the 18th Century.
- In the mid 18th century the Eggleston's Powhatan land was conveyed to Richard Taliaferro through his marriage to an Eggleston granddaughter - whose name was Elizabeth.
- Richard Taliferro also held 2 important offices in the Colonial
government, serving as the Justice of the Peace in the 1730's & Sheriff by 1741.
- Taliaferro died in 1779, Richard Jr. received the manison & Taliaferro's daughter Elizabeth received the Wythe House.
- Taliaferro's daughter Elizabeth was married to George Wythe, a signer of the
Declaration of Independence.
